I am using what I learned from personal success to coach others. There was a time when I was healthy, athletic, followed a low fat diet, worked hard and then I got sick. At the time, I was serving on active duty as a dietitian in the US Army. Then, in 1992 I fell ill, and retired with a medical discharge. The diagnosis was Dermatomyositis, a rare auto-immune muscle disease, also called inflammatory myopathy. I had extreme muscle weakness, difficulty holding up my head, getting up from a chair, or climbing stairs; chronic fatigue, shivering and pain; difficulty swallowing and breathing, and early pulmonary fibrosis. A whole package of other problems came with it. I was treated with high doses of prednisone and methotrexate. Then, IVIG and pain medications. The effects were osteoporosis; weight gain; adrenal insufficiency; depression; anxiety; hypersensitvity to smells and touch; frequent infections including pneumonia, e. coli, colds; reflux and a close call with meningitis. Digestion was further impaired. |

In 2002, I consulted Dr. Tom Cowan, who specializes in anthroposophic family medicine, and nutrition. This doctor said, Nourishing Traditions! I started eating lots of high quality butter, Celtic Sea Salt, local clean raw milk, (easy to digest and full of natural probiotics) bone broth and fermented vegetables. I noticed a difference within two weeks. My stomach started feeling better and (sorry to be so graphic) my bowels were healthier. My body was healing itself from the effects of the medicine using food I prepared differetnly than i used to. I was still weak and had pain but I soon began taking less meds. for the reflux and thrush. I did not catch anymore colds. I started breathing better and felt no need for an inhaler. It took time, some shifts in thinking, and awareness of my choices. In 2004, I participated in a Phase II clinical trial using Rituxan, which depletes CD20 and B cells. Since 2007, I am in remission, off all medicine, have normal functioning adrenal glands. The osteoporosis is reversed. In 2006 I started my own practice as a personal nutrition coach. I also publish articles, provide lectures and presentations.
I am a personal nutrition coach and a whole food, slow food coach. I am enjoying working with clients in their home because they are 'hands on' interaction. My perfect clients have health as a priority.
