MY PERSONAL STORY...

Is the food you are eating giving you maximum expression of health?  How much is it costing you not to eat real, wholesome delicious food?  I am using what I learned from personal success to coach others.  There was a time when I was living an athletic lifestyle, followed a low fat diet, worked hard followed the 'rules' and then I got sick.  At the time, I was serving on active duty as a dietitian in the US Army.   Then, in 1992 I fell ill, and retired with a medical discharge.  The diagnosis was Dermatomyositis, a rare auto-immune muscle disease, also called inflammatory myopathy.  I had extreme muscle weakness, difficulty holding up my head, getting up from a chair, or climbing stairs; chronic fatigue, shivering and pain; difficulty swallowing and breathing, and early pulmonary fibrosis.  A whole package of other problems came with it.  I was treated with high doses of prednisone and methotrexate.  Then, IVIG and pain medications.  The effects were osteoporosis; weight gain; a lot of gas, reflux, adrenal insufficiency; depression; anxiety; high intra-ocular pressure; borderline diabetes; hypersensitvity to smells and touch; frequent infections including pneumonia; yeast infections; e. coli, colds; reflux and a close call with meningitis.

In 2002, I consulted Dr. Tom Cowan, who specializes in anthroposophic family medicine, and nutrition.  This doctor said, Nourishing Traditions!  I started eating lots of high quality butter, Celtic Sea Salt, local clean raw milk, (easy to digest and full of natural probiotics) bone broth and fermented vegetables.  I noticed a difference within two weeks.  My stomach started feeling better and my bowels were healthier.  My body was healing itself from the inside out!  I was still weak and had pain but I soon needed less medicine for the reflux, thrush and other yeast infections. They soon resolved.  I did not catch anymore colds.  I started breathing better and felt no need for an inhaler.  It took time, some shifts in thinking, and awareness of my choices and searching for resources of learning traditional foods and ways to prepare them.  I was open to complementary medicine.  In 2004, I participated in a Phase II clinical trial using Rituxan, which depletes CD20 and B cells.  I embraced the growth opportunity of learining what real health is.  I redefined my role as a dietitian.  Since 2007, I am in remission, off all medicine, have normal functioning adrenal glands.  The osteoporosis is reversed.  I enjoy eating food with lots of friendly bacteria and enzymes.  Now I talk about  healthy gut flora as the source of vibrant health and digestion.

I enjoying travelling and working with clients in their home, exploring the resources available in their environment to support them. I live an inspired and empowered life.  I am so happy and grateful for people who support local farmers and the growing awareness of sustainable living.
